Work from home

I finished Uni 10 years ago and I’ve started working full time a couple of months after that. I was particularly keen on the jobs I had and every new job was in a different line of work.

8 years ago I got my dream job, something that will push me every single day and I loved it. It was soon after I got married and I thought I was having an amazing life, nights out and eating in a restaurant a few times a week with friends and colleagues, a great husband and our own flat. I was pushing myself to the limit, I was gaining weight because I didn’t have enough time to cook or eat properly. I was feeling poorly with lack of energy and I was bingeing on Red Bulls and coffee. A few things changed in the company I worked for and I was able to work from home, 6 years ago. Now I know I could never go back to a 9-5 schedule.

I was still working hard, having meetings online with colleagues abroad at 9pm. But I could also have fun during the day, I could go with a friend for lunch without looking constantly at the watch. I could have a dog and I got Festus as I could make my own schedule.

After moving to the UK, 4 years ago, I knew I want to do this for the rest of my life. I want to have a flexible schedule. I want to wash the laundry during the week, as it takes only minutes to throw the clothes and turn the switch on. I love that I can go for a walk when it’s sunny and not in the weekend.

The cons of working from home are obvious. I can’t have a laugh with my colleagues or a party at the office. The parties we had at the last job were amazing. I miss socializing and Christmas gifts. At the same time, I don’t miss the time wasted in the traffic to go to work and back home. I don’t miss having to hurry to get there.

Another amazing thing about working from home and having a flexible schedule is that I can spend time on my hobbies, like blogging. I don’t think I would have the time to blog if I had to spend 2 hours commuting to and from work.

Do you work from home or would you like to?

  1. Thank you for sharing. I am sure a lot of people would like to work from home but don’t really know how to go about it. I would happily recommend this article to anyone thinking of working from work or starting their own business.

  2. Would be nice to work from home as can fit in family commitments around it so don’t miss out and not so stressful. Nice to get the right balance

  3. I would love to work from home. I hate the 9-5 lifestyle. I’ve been trying to do that but my blog and Etsy shop just weren’t bringing in enough cash, so I’ve applied for a Carer job and I’m training tomorrow. Would love to do what you do, though, you’re lucky 🙂 x

  4. Working from home sounds great, I’d love to be able to do it. I think the ideal option for me would be working in the office 2 or 3 days a week and working from home the rest. Like you, I would miss the socialising!
