Reading challenge

Reading challenge 2016

Last November I discovered a reading challenge on Beth’s blog and I found the idea fascinating. This is my reading challenge for 2016.

After looking online for a while and seeing some puzzling challenges, I’ve decided to make my own. Some of the genres in this challenge are new to me. It will be fun to look for books and hubby said he might join in. As I have no idea how much time I’ll have each month, my target is 1 book each month. I also want to read other books too. If I have time and I like the genre, I will read 2 or more. I didn’t start searching for books, but I will go to the library these days.

Monthly Reading challenge 2016

January: Short Story Month
January is a busy month for me with work, so I decided to start with something that will not add extra pressure on my schedule.

February: Creative nonfiction Month
Creative nonfiction includes memoir, diary, travel writing, food writing, biography, autobiography, literary journalism, chronicle. Yes, I chose a category that allows me to read food books. I don’t know the books I’ll choose, so it can easily be something else.

March: Science fiction Month
I read only 1 book of science fiction, a recommendation from a friend. The book was Ender’s game and I liked it a lot, more than I expected it. So maybe my next sci-fi book will be another of Orson Scott Card’s books.

April: Autobiography Month
I cheated. I want to read autobiographies and biographies after reading last year “Michael Schumacher the edge of greatness” by James Allen. I am and I will always be a MS fan, so reading that book was amazing, I learned new things about him. This kind of books make me think of other aspects too, I find them very motivational.

May: Folklore Month
I would like to read folklore as it’s not something I did before (beside school). Now I’m much more interested in history so I assume this will be interesting too.

June: Epic Tome Month
I think any book over 600 pages can be considered an epic tome. The books I usually read have less than 400 pages. I don’t think it matters how many pages it has if the book is interesting, but it has to be interesting.

July: Biography Month
See autobiography.

August: Horror Month
This will be a first. I’m not that into horror movies, so I never had the desire to read a horror book. As the whole idea of a challenge is to do something I wouldn’t normally do, this horror month appeared in my reading challenge.

September: Mythopoeia Month
Mythopoeia means that the book contains fictional mythology that is created by the author. An example is Tolkien. It will be interesting, I can’t wait to read it. This genre is new for me.

October: Famous Detective Month
I’ll have to chose between Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Nancy Drew. I’ve read a few books by Agatha Christie and I liked it, but I stopped and never got back to reading them. So, hopefully, this will rekindle the love for detective books.

November: Science Month
Anything scientific. Now I’m thinking I’ll read Psychology, as this is my background, I’ll just have to wait and see.

December: Historical Fiction Month
Maybe I chose this only to be sure I can add a Mary Balogh book in this year’s challenge. I love historical fiction and she is one of my favourite authors. Last December I’ve read 5 books by her, books that I already knew, but they are too much fun not to read.

I’ll write at the end of the year how the challenge went and most likely I will mention some of the books during the year, especially if I’ll love them. I would love to hear your thoughts on my challenge, so please leave me a comment.

    1. This is one of the reasons I aim to read 1 book per month. If I don’t like a new genre, I will not read a second one just because I have to read x amount of books.

  1. Fantastic challenge! I love some of your ideas especially Mythopoeia and Horror – I’ll keep an eye out!
