Last month, on our holiday in Anglesey, we’ve been to Caernarfon Castle, it’s an World Heritage Site and part of CADW.
The Castle is built like a fortress. One of its features are the polygonal towers, not round like most castles. The site of this castle had previously been the location of a Norman motte and bailey castle. Before that it was a Roman fort. It was built during the reign of King Edward I. It was finished in 1330. A couple of hundred years later the castles weren’t as important and it felt into disrepair.
The views from the towers are amazing and it’s worth the effort to climb those narrow stairs to the top.
In 1969, the investiture of the Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles took place here. The stand is made with welsh slate. Caernarfon Castle was used for the first time for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911.
I love these narrow passageways that connect the towers. They must have been great for defence.
There are some seagulls around the castle and they don’t seem too be bothered by people. This one was happy to have his picture taken.
A heart shaped lock was a little unexpected, although it did made for a great picture.
Stained glass with the message “Dieu et mon droit.” on a coat of arms. It was the motto of the British monarch, adopted by King Henry V and used until 1982.
A view of the Snowdon mountains, just beautiful.
The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is housed in two of the castle’s towers. It has free entry and it’s quite interesting. I would recommend visiting it.

This place is amazing. I feel so lucky to live so close to this magnificent structure. I haven’t been to the top of the towers for a while now but I did visit it recently. I overheard someone asking the guide about the coronation circle and the guide said that it’s likely it will be used again on the investiture of Prince William. That’ll be an exciting day! My Nain was there for Prince Charles’ investiture so I’m going to try and be there for Prince William’s. 🙂

It is such a well-preserved castle! It’s a proper fairytale one. So wonderful that you got to visit it and see the views. That corridor view reminds me of Doctor Who’s penultimate episode last series!
I haven’t been to Caernarfon Castle but love the photos you took. I love visiting castles so will have to add it to my list of places to visit.

I’ve never been to Caernarfon Castle but it looks like it’s worth a visit. So I’ll add it to my list of places to go when I get a car!
