Donington Historic Festival

Last weekend I went to Donington Historic Festival. As you might know if you’ve been following my blog for while, I love F1 and racing cars and I went to Donington Park Museum a couple of years ago. I loved it, so I was delighted to be invited, along with my husband and a friend to attend the Donington Historic Festival. We’ve decided to visit it on Sunday, that meant we watched the F1 race when we got back home, so the whole day was dedicated to motorsports.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Donington Park. Its history started in 1931 when a local motor bike racer convinced the owners of Donington Hall to allow for the first race. It was the 2nd race track, after Brooklands. The circuit was closed in 1939 with the start of the WWII and used as a military depot. In May 1977 Donington Park was opened again for races. This was the 7th Donington Historic Festival and it was superb.

We arrived just as the GT & Sports Car Cup for pre-66 GT & pre-63 sportscars was finishing. It was so exciting to hear the cars. We had a stroll through the Paddock and headed up to the racetrack.

I made a short clip, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

There were so many wonderful cars in the paddocks. There were so many cars, old and beautiful. I really loved these belts that are holding the bonnet.

We managed to see the FJHRA/HSCC ‘Silverline’ Championship for pre-61 Front-Engined Formula Juniors – Race 2 from start to finish. It was exciting to see them. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a live race. Last time I was in Bucharest at an F3 street circuit 10 years ago and I loved it.

We saw the stunts made by Paul Swift and his team. It was amazing, I think my husband would love to try one of their thrill rides or the 2 hours and a half stunt driving course.

We got the chance to see one of the cars recovered from off-track and the race behind the safety car. It was really exciting.

The cars were getting ready for the HSCC Historic Formula 2 FIA International Race Series Race.

I loved this race, it was my favourite. The loud noise of the engines made it a bit more special than the other races. The race was exciting, I saw a couple of overtaking maneuvers from where we were. The downside of being live on track is that it’s harder to keep track of the cars.

I saw the winner taking the lead and that was very exciting. I wasn’t 100% sure until I saw him on the podium.

I have no idea when my husband took that picture. Rebecca and I were so excited to see the paddock. We weren’t allowed there, but we got a sneak peek through the glass door.

I was invited to Donington Historic Festival for the purpose of this review.

  1. Ah it was so great to go! Thanks again for inviting me! 🙂 Shame it was so cold though but I loved all the cars. The noise was incredible! If your husband decides to do the Paul Swift stunt experience I want to see a video! 😀 x
