Sundry Reviews

Darkest Hour

On Sunday my husband and I went to see the Darkest Hour. I had no intention to blog about the movie, as I don’t usually do that. But I really loved the film. Hence, my review.
I saw Dunkirk and I’ve enjoyed it, I thought it was a 8/10. So, I thought the Darkest Hour will be the same. I was wrong, it was, from my point of view, much better, a definite 10/10.

When it comes to spoilers, I will try not to say too many, but it’s a movie that follows historical facts and I’m going to mention some of them. Spoiler alert.

Darkest Hour

The movie begins before Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister. I thought the movie would be about a longer period of time, but it’s only less than a month, May 1940. He replaced Neville Chamberlain in a time when the Nazi were seemingly unstoppable, the British forces were in retreat at Calais and on the beaches at Dunkirk. France, Belgium, and Holland were under German occupation.

The Conservative Party was against sending more troops, in part because there weren’t any more troops to send. Instead they were thinking of negotiating a peace treaty with Hitler, brokered by Italy. What would have been a huge mistake considering what happened next, when Italy joined the war on the side of Germany, only a couple of months after that. I also think the way the story is told is realistic; France, Italy, U.S., they are all presented realistic.

I like how Churchill’s involvement in the Dunkirk operations was presented, or how he was writing his speeches. Gary Oldman, the actor playing Churchill is amazing. I’m a bit biased when it comes to Churchill, as I think he was great. Now, after seeing the movie, I plan to read a couple of books about him.

Have you seen the movie? Or would you like to see it? I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I think Gary Oldman is a great actor, but this didn’t particularly appeal to me. I might have to find time to see it though, if its as good as you say! Plus I heard a lot of it was filmed in Yorkshire, so that’s another good reason to see it! ;p

  2. A good movie pretty solid but not sensational historical drama.Overall it’s a good one time watch for those who loves hollywood movies.
