Brodsworth Hall and Gardens

This is the second location we’ve been to on our day trip to South Yorkshire, the other one was Conisbrough Castle.

01 Brodsworth Hall and Gardens

The mansion is beautiful, built in an Italian style with flat roof in 1860s. It was a family home for 120 years and English Heritage decided to keep the Hall as “found”.

In the Hall we were able to see only the servant rooms and the kitchens, but during the summer there are more rooms opened to the public.

The Butler had to take things from the top cupboard using a ladder. I would have been terrified, I must admit.

Isn’t that a wonderful Wicker picnic basket. I have to buy a similar one for the summer.

My idea of the perfect kitchen: Victorian. It looks amazing and it’s so big, I love it.

I had to ask the Room Guide about that door on the left side as I thought it’s unusual. The family wanted a short corridor between the kitchen and Dining Room. She told me a few guests burned themselves with hot food, as they aspected the food to be lukewarm, like everywhere else.

The servants quarters were near the children rooms. As the Hall has a flat roof, they built a special wing for servants.

I was surprised the kids didn’t live in a better room, as the mansion was built in the Victorian period. That triggered an interesting discussion with another Room Guide. The servants had a better life than the norm, bigger rooms.

The gardens were beautiful in March, I think they should look amazing in the summer. We have to visit again Brodsworth to see the flowers in bloom and the other rooms too.

  1. I’ve never been here before! There are some lovely places in south yorkshire. Have you been to cusworth hall and gainsbourgh hall? They’re pretty close to that area.
