Restaurants & Pubs Reviews

The Eating Gorilla

The Eating Gorilla is a fully vegan restaurant in Penrhyndeudraeth, North Wales. It’s also the only one in that area, so a must go to place if you are a vegan on holiday in that part of the world. Of course, their dishes are amazing and it would satisfy any client, but it is a destination of choice for vegans without a doubt. You can read more about them on their website.

The Eating Gorilla

The Pole Pole Foundation is a non-governmental organisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. If anyone orders two specific items from their menu, the cauliflower wings or the Gorilla burger, a 50p donation will be made to this charity. Of course, diners can choose something else and ask the staff to add a donation to this charity on their bill. This also explains the gorilla in the room, a huge stuffed gorilla that is moved around when customers need a table. It’s so much fun and it raises awareness on this topic in a lovely and kind manner.

Cauliflower wings

We ordered the cauliflower wings for starters, to share. These are made with sesame batter, a maple glaze, and an option between the spicy buffalo or smoky bbq sauce. We picked the bbq sauce. It comes with salad and dip. It was really lovely, we both enjoyed it.

Greek-style Kebab

Greek-style Kebab is what my husband ordered. It had red peppers, onions, cabbage. The chips were delicious. I had a taste and the dish was really good.

Mushrooms a la Mariniere

Although, I would order what I ordered the first time if I visit them again: Mushrooms a la Mariniere. These were mushrooms mixed with lentils and shallots in a superb sauce made with wine. The bread was fantastic, but the portions were very big, so I couldn’t finish the bread.

Overall the food was amazing. They do have a lot of lovely looking desserts, but we didn’t order any because we were full. It’s the kind of place I would love to visit again and I would have done if only it was closer to us. If you are in north Wales and want to support a local business, do stop by. It was very popular when we went, on a Friday off-season. This is why the only picture is with the table at the back, as the rest of the restaurant was full.

The Eating Gorilla is on High Street, Penrhyndeudraeth, LL48 6BN. There is a car park nearby, only a couple of minutes away, and there is limited on street parking as well.

  1. Oooh, the wings look amazing!!!! I had some amazing buffalo Cauli wings at our local vegan BBQ place, Stoked, and they were SUPERB! I must go back there again! They are the best way to eat Cauliflower!

    1. I saw that they had another place. If you liked their food, I think you’ll like the vegan one as well. That mushroom dish was amazing, if you like mushrooms. 🙂

  2. What a fun name for a restaurant and a great way to bring awareness and benefit to that foundation! I’d pass on your mushroom dish, but the starter and your husband’s plate look delicious.
