Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was released on 23 October 2020. I don’t usually talk about movies I watch, especially as rarely I watch the latest movies. In the last weekend we watched initially Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan before watching Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

You might know that the movie is not entirely filmed with actors. Many of the people who appear in the movie are random people who had no idea the filming was for this movie. They were told it is a sort of documentary about something completely different. So, their reactions are real and Sacha Baron Cohen and Maria Bakalova are having to improvise. This is why this movie is so good, because at times (many times) it doesn’t look real.

It has lots of funny parts, for example, the scenes in Kazakhstan are actually shot in Romania. In their meetings with the authorities, the guy from the government speaks in Romanian, Sacha replies in Hebrew and Polish, while Maria speaks in her native language, Bulgarian.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm – the trailer

The plot is simple, Borat needs to give a gift to the people in power in US and A, for the benefit of Kazakhstan. His daughter sneaks in and eats the gift (a monkey), and so she is the one who would be given to one of the men in power in the White House. This leads to hilarious situations, involving Mike Pence and a rather embarrassing situation for Rudy Giuliani.

Without spoiling the show, I don’t think it was simplistic at all and while is highly politicised, it shows some white supremacists taking him into their home for 5 days. They have no idea who he is. As he commented in an interview, it shows the humanity of the people with whom he interacted with. There were some situations in which his safety was questioned, as he had to wear a bullet-proof vest when he attended a white supremacy rally and he had to run when they realized who he is.

People who appeared in the movie without their permission or as bystanders include: Mike Pence, Rudy Giuliani, salesman, debutante coach, the Pastor Jonathan Bright (that was one of the most disturbing parts of the movie, really), plastic surgeon Charles Wallace, the Hillsborough Republican Women’s Club, QAnon believers, and Holocaust survivor Judith Dim Evans. Also… Tom Hanks.

Have you seen the movie? Do you plan to?

  1. I’ve never seen any Borat and to be honest, I don’t really have any interest in it – I never saw Ali G or any of his previous things- I seem to have missed out on a lot of mainstream things. Your review is intriguing though- it makes me curious about the film.

  2. I haven’t see this film. I think Sasha sometimes takes thing to far with his humour, but at the same time I’m happy to hear that he showed the corruption of politicians (good for him)! It definitely takes bravery for most of the things he does.

  3. I haven’t seen either of the two Borat movies – I do like Sacha Baron Cohen in interviews but I find him a little trying to watch in character – glad you enjoyed it though 🙂

  4. While familiar with Sacha Baron Cohen, I’ve never seen anything of his. (and I may never get that image of him wearing a mask out of my brain! 😂)

I seldom watch any films anymore, but might find this enjoyable.

    1. I loved the movie, although the mask thing is crazy. He called it a maskini. :)) I mentioned that he stayed for 5 days with two QAnon believers and that made me think. They were so generous of letting him stay with them, during the lockdown, he ordered something stupid and they had a laugh, indulge his quirkiness. How many people would do the same? I wouldn’t.

Also, the Rudy part is fantastic. He was very upset after the film was released, but then Sacha replied in a fab way, see here on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_44JkaKLVY

  5. I watched this a few days ago, I did like it because it shows you the true colours of some people that need to have their true colours shown! I can’t believe they dare do the stuff they do though! Insane.

    1. I read a bit about how they made the film. He waited for 5 hours in the toilet, dressed as Trump, at the Republican conference. With Rudy he waited for a few hours in a hideaway his team built in the room. It’s amazing how complicated it was to shot those scenes.
