Great Budworth

Great Budworth is a small village in Cheshire. It can trace back its history to 11th century, as it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The name Great Budworth comes from the Old Saxon words bode (‘dwelling’) and wurth (‘a place by water’), the water being Pickworth Mere and Budworth Mere. A school was built in 1500s for the children that lived in the community. In 1875, the George and Dragon pub was remodelled. Before 1934 the only source of drinking water was a running pump, after that a pipeline was installed. Until 1948, Great Budworth was part of the Arley Hall estate.

Now Great Budworth has a population of 300. I took a lot of pictures from the village. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I find walking through small villages like this one a relaxing and beautiful pass time. After that, I enjoy seeing everything again when I chose the pictures for the blog post and I retouch them in Photoshop.

Great Budworth

There is a sense of tranquility and a peacefulness that appeals to me. I’m not sure how easy it would be to live in a place like this. I would love to try it, but, at the same time, I never lived in a remote area. Even on holidays, when we went to a self catering cottage in the countryside, we went out each day to visit different tourist attractions. It was hard when I moved to UK and I discovered that most shops are closed on a Sunday afternoon and that the non-stop shops actually are closed in the weekend nights. It might sound daft and it does sound daft to me now, but I missed the option to go to the supermarket on a Sunday at 8pm to get a pie or who knows what. It was strange because I never realized before how often I thought of going to the shops late in the Sundays. After a couple of years I got used to it and now I wouldn’t go shopping on a Sunday afternoon even if I had the possibility. Would I feel the same if I moved in a small village with no supermarkets, what would I do when I run out of yeast and I want to bake something? While this might sound random, last night I baked bread. At 10pm I took it out of the oven (and had a slice!), but I had yeast in the cupboard. Besides, everything is at least 30 minutes away. Would I like that or not?

  1. What a glorious place to visit
    Love these small rural places
One for my list next time I’m around the area

  2. What a gorgeous little village!
I think I could live somewhere like that, but I’d have to learn to be more organised!

  3. Oh it is sooooooooooooooo pretty!!! I used to live in a very busy Suburban place with Asian foodshops open at all hours, so when I got married and moved to somewhere with not many places near by, it was very strange but then I got used to it!!x

  4. Great budworth looks like such a wonderful place – it reminds me of old towns I’d see on video games like Runescape haha!
