Bergamo was not on my list of places to visit in Italy before arriving in Italy. After a chat with an Italian who lives in Milan, my husband and I said we should visit Bergamo on our last day in Italy, before our flight (which was in the evening). We assumed that Bergamo is a new city, as it has the airport, but in fact there is an ancient city too and it’s so beautiful it is worth spending at least a day. So, if you are flighting to or from Bergamo, allow for a day to do sightseeing.
I will share a lot of pictures from Bergamo, so you can get a feel of the place. I fully recommend taking the train tour around the city, using both funiculars, and visiting museums too, if you have the time. There are regular trains from and to Milan and these are very cheap. This makes Bergamo great for a day-trip if you are based in Milan too.
I too, have never come across Bergamo before. However, not really a surprise, because I think that in keeping with many people, the airport cities tend to get forgotten, unless they are well-known and mainstream. The airport is just somewhere you arrive and leave from, with much of a trip spent in other locations. I love that Bergamo manages to combine the historic with the modern and although I would probably be most interested in the historic, I might just have to take a peek at the modern too! Your great pictures really sold this to me as a destination 🙂
I would have missed a fascinating city just because it has an airport in it, isn’t that crazy? 🙂
This looks like such a fabulous trip, Anca. And this stop is no exception. I’m glad they added it to your list. The photos are lovely.
What a lovely place! I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of it before…. and it looks fairly large. Maybe I need to brush up on Italian geography!

I only heard of it because that’s where one of the airports near Milan is. But it’s such a wonderful place, I’m happy we visited it. It is large with the new and old cities.
