Cerne Giant and White Horse

Cerne Giant and White Horse sounds like a fairytale. There are 2 attractions in southern England – Cerne Giant and Osmington White Horse, a short drive from each other. I saw both yesterday, so I am sharing pictures today. Cerne Giant is about 1,000 years old, possibly older – Viking, and the White Horse in from the 1800s.

Path to Cerne Giant

This is the path from the car park to the viewing point. We had such a good view, that we didn’t go all the way to the viewing point.

This is the Cerne Giant, with a closer picture below. It’s incredible to think that a man, shown like this, survived so many changes: the reformation, Cromwell [who banned Christmas celebrations] and the puritans, the Victorians with their passion for decorum. It makes me wonder if there were others like this, who were less fortuned and were ploughed over.

Osmington White Horse afar

Osmington White Horse is a hill figure cut into the limestone of Osmington Hill, hence the name, in 1808. The figure depicts King George III riding his horse and can be seen for miles around. Osmington White Horse is designated as a Scheduled Monument.

Osmington White Horse

I think it is funny that the figure is called the white horse when it is the depiction of a monarch, made during his life.

Where you aware of these 2 attractions?

  1. I was aware of both but haven’t seen either. they are amazing — especially when you think about how many years they have had to survive.

  2. I know I’ve heard of the White Horse, but don’t remember hearing about the Giant. It’s amazing to think that things like this are still there… especially after 1000 years! I’m always impressed when things done in large scale (including crop designs, etc.) look so real considering they didn’t have drones, planes, or whatever to be able to see from above.

    1. You are right, the way they made these figures is very impressive. I’m happy we stopped to see them.
