Monkey World

I have decided to share the pictures from Monkey World today, as I also published the review for the book written by one of the co-founders of the sanctuary – Jeremy & Amy by Jeremy Keelings. I loved the book, so do read it if you like memoirs.

I think she is Amy, from the book mentioned above. In the same enclosure there is a male and 2 females and I think this female is Amy.

The enclosures are amazing, big, with lots of stuff for entertainment. They are loved and well kept.

On the left is one of the laboratory cages in which the 88 monkeys were kept before being rescued by Jeremy and the team and brought to Monkey World. He talks about this rescue in his book, with such clarity and compassion. I don’t think many people who visit can forget this cage. Having it on display is vital in showing what the animals went through. These animals were rescued from Chile, but many others were rescued from the UK.

Orang-utans must be one of my favourite monkeys. They are so laid back and chilled.

Chimps were so funny with the water hose. The carer was engaging with them and calling them and they would come to get some water to drink or to cool down. It was fascinating to watch them, each one reacting differently to water or to being called. One chimp pulled the lip of another chimp who was drinking and everybody started laughing, all apes, on both sides of the fence.

We had a wonderful time and we would like to visit this place again. Now, after reading the book, I wish I could go back for another visit. The only reasons I’m not there in the next couple of weeks is because it’s far from us, taking about 5 hours drive just to get there.

  1. My husband loves chimps and orangutans. Decades ago, when my older brother was in medical school, they had Rhesus Monkeys that were smart enough to sometimes escape from their cages. I have very mixed feelings about animals used in research.

    1. I am against animal testing because not only it is so cruel to the animals, there are other ways to test. Some medicines fail in animal tests and most medicines that do not fail in animal tests do not pass the human tests afterwards. This is what I read.
I think you might like the book, as a visit to the sanctuary is a bit more complicated.

  2. Beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing this tour.
Thank you so much for your visit and kind comment on my blog 😊 Yes, making French text larger than the English is indeed political. Not all Quebec politicians agree on this, though, and of course I think both English and French should be of the same importance. Canada ❤️ is a bilingual country. It is only in Quebec that certain politicians want to be silly, in my opinion.
