National Portrait Gallery in 15 Highlights

National Portrait Gallery in 15 Highlights is a bit of an unusual post. I share only 15 highlights, which can be a piece of art or just a small detail from a painting. They are not in any specific order, just as I photographed them. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know which one you find more intriguing.

  1. I especially love the details on the Elizabethan-period portrait. Amazing, aren’t they? I visited National Portrait when I was there in October. I haven’t posted it yet but the two current royal portraits are two I included in my upcoming post! It’s an amazing spot. I didn’t get to finish it but gotta save something for next time!

  2. What a fun idea for a post! They’re all so different, it’s hard to choose a favorite, but I’m fascinated by the cross where you can see a small detail in its center that looks like someone kneeling before an angel. I also like the last one with the cow/vaccine detail.

I’ve never made it to the National Portrait Gallery on any of my visits to London, but would love to go someday.

    1. That cross is from a painting of Mary Queen of Scots. All the paintings are of well known people, but the details are not easy to identify unless you know that specific painting.
The cow is on a portrait of Edward Jenner, if course. I liked that the cow was included considering their contribution to the development of vaccines.

    1. That’s a hidden cupboard within a prayer stand, used by Henry VII’s mother. She was depicted praying.

      Fascinating small detail, isn’t it?
