Wallingford Castle was built in the 11th century, starting in 1067 on the direct instructions of William the Conqueror. After 2 centuries the castle was expanded. In early 1500s it was inherited by the future Henry VIII. During the Civil War the castle was a Royalist stronghold. Recognizing the potential danger it could cause, Cromwell’s Council of State ordered Wallingford Castle demolition on 17 November 1652. I thought it was appropriate to write about it on the anniversary. The castle grounds are open to visitors each day, free of charge.
Enjoy the pictures!

What an interesting place to visit and how wonderful that it is free. Fantastic photos. x

This is really interesting! I had no idea that Wallingford had a castle! I would like to visit here again esp as I have 3 friends who live in that town!!x
I enjoyed all your photos. I know I’ve said it before, but I find it tragic how many beautiful things were destroyed over the years out of fear, or prejudice, or whatever. Even the ruins are beautiful.

Cromwell managed so much destruction in his decade in power. It’s very sad all this happened.
