Meet Bernoulli

Bernoulli made her [I assume is a she] entrance in our lives [conservatory] last week. If you remember, back in 2018, we had another guest, Schrödinger. You can read about her in that post, in which I mentioned in passing Einstein, the neighbours’ cat who was not particularly bright, but so cute.

Now we have another physicist, of sorts. Unlike Schrödinger, who was so cuddly and friendly, Bernoulli is not keen on interacting with us. It doesn’t matter, as she can take advantage of our B&B accommodation for as long as she needs.

Bernoulli

Imagine my surprise to see a cat entering the conservatory. I didn’t think much of this, considering that we had cats visiting our garden from time to time. But, Bernoulli keeps coming and she slept in our conservatory for the last few nights.

Schrödinger had a funny name, due to how our dog Festus interacted with her. Bernoulli’s name is just as appropriate considering the situation. As my husband and I are both vegan, we only have milk alternatives in the house. My husband said that he will put some milk for the cat, oat barista if anyone is curious. I thought the cat will not have any of it, as it has a different taste and smell. I was so wrong. The cat loved it! She drinks quite a lot of it. So, this is how the cat became Bernoulli.

Daniel Bernoulli was an 18th century physicist who worked on fluid mechanics. From wiki: Bernoulli’s principle is a key concept in fluid dynamics that relates pressure, density, speed and height. Bernoulli’s principle states that an increase in the speed of a parcel of fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in either the pressure or the height above a datum. The principle is named after the Swiss mathematician and physicist Daniel Bernoulli, who published it in his book Hydrodynamica in 1738.

food and bed

Seeing that she spent a night in the conservatory, I went and bought food and 2 beds for her. One bed is a pet duvet she likes sleeping on, see in the picture above. In the bowls (I didn’t find cat bowls at the shop that had the beds and food) is adult cat food and, of course, the oat barista she enjoys so much.

I looked at what cat milk contains and it’s milk with no lactose, as that is what can make a cat sick. So, the oat milk is a great alternative, considering that is, of course, naturally lactose free.

near the tipi

Bernoulli doesn’t like the tipi at all. At one point she slept near it. So, I moved it on the chair, if she fancy trying it again, and put the white duvet instead.

Bernoulli sleeping

During the day she is spending a lot of time sleeping on our neighbour’s shed. I took this picture from my house. She also sleeps on our garden bench, but she is too scared to come too often during the day.

in the conservatory

Although sometime she comes in the conservatory, to have a quick look around and have some food. I think it is really sad that she is so scared of people. She is gradually feeling more comfortable with us around, but I think it will take a long time to get to the point when we can pet her, if ever. Of course, that makes no difference, we’ll provide food and leave the door to the conservatory open for her day and night.

  1. What a great name for a beautiful cat! To perhaps give you some hope on her shyness, Gypsy was like that when found — steering clear. Eventually, he would let me pet him as he ate — poor little guy was so hungry that human touch didn’t bother him, so long as he had food. Then, a trail of treats to the chair, where he would take the last from my hand, and then pretty soon, dropped on the lap or the couch beside me. It took time. That was the clingiest cat I’ve ever had for the next 13 years!

  2. She’s so pretty!!! I knew that milk, regular, was not good for cats but interesting that oat milk would work!
I’m glad she has a conservatory to visit and hope she grows less nervous of you!

    1. I just hope that she will be more comfortable around us and spend more time in the conservatory, especially as the temperature gets lower. Ideally she would be happy to come indoors, but I don’t think that is possible in the near future.

    1. I had the same assumption about cats, but now the pet shops have this “special milk”, although lactose-free milk is available in supermarkets too.

  3. She’s a pretty cat. That’s interesting about lactose making cats sick considering how we always think of giving a kitty a bowl of milk. The oat milk sounds like a great alternative.

I like the name choice, too. (as well as Schrödinger)

    1. Yes, a bowl of milk for cats seems so natural. It’s likely that many cats are lactose intolerant, just like dogs do (I think it’s more common for dogs than cats). She loves the oat milk, so we’re very happy with that.
